Quinta Da Alorna Reserva Arinto & Chardonnay 2010 Branco

Lágrima escorrida no copo.

Aromas:

English:
Made from a blend of Chardonnay and Arinto, in an area where international varieties grow particular well. The Arinto matures in stainless steel vats and Chardonnay in French oak barrels.

Appearance:
Medium to pale straw yellow with some greenish reflections. Tears roll down quickly in the glass.

Aromas:
Some stone fruit and vegetable hints. It is moderate in the nose and did not find influence of Chardonnay.

Palate:
Very much alive and kicking due to near crisp acidity, but is somewhat flavorless. Mineral at the beginning with apricots, peaches and remaining stone fruit essentially hidden, finish with smoked sensations. Light bodied and slightly dry with moderate flavor, impresses more by the live attack..

Finish:
Medium.

Conclusion:
I did not like it particularly, specially because these two varieties blend very well together. If you want a great Chardonnay from the same producer continue reading here.

Mux 2007 Tinto

Cor granada escuro, lágrima escorre rapidamente no copo.

Aromas:

Sítio do Produtor:
http://www.muxagat.pt/

English:
Formerly known as Muxagat now renamed as Mux, takes me to a time of great memories in the past enjoying this wine.

Appearance:
Dark garnet color, tear runs down quickly in the glass.

Aromas:
It's not very aromatic, neither has a great nose. It's quite simple. Red fruits only.

Palate:
Slightly polished in the mouth felt red fruit and balanced oak with some vanilla at the end. Medium body, soft and correct acidity, it is easy to drink but it lacks structure. It's too simple and direct. Has no impact, and does not grow in the mouth.

Finish:
Medium.

Conslusion:
A little disappointment bearing in mind that despite keeping the classic profile, keeps loosing lost some of the good properties, like the 2005 vintage.

Deixa lágrima escorrida no copo.

Aromas:

Sítio do Produtor:

English:
Made from unknown blend of varieties Aged in French oak barrels for 6 months.

Appearance:
Yellow citric slightly saturated. Tear runs quickly into the glass.

Aromas:
Aromatic, some floral notes, citrus and honey hints.

Palate:
Very mineral and dry at first, but in the end felt a concentrate of lemon, honey and herbs. I was afraid at start, flavorless, with light body, it seems a wine with essence only, but then brings some excitement, great acidity live and balanced.

Finish:
Medium.

Conclusion:
A white wine, with no tricks, oddities, without indefinite character. A good surprise.

Carm 2010 Branco

Sitio do produtor:
http://www.carm.pt

English:
Made from a blend of not identified varieties. Aged in steel vats.

Appearance:
Pale yellow. Do not leaves tear into the cup.

Aromas:
Aromatic. Notes of tangerine.

Palate:
Noble character, light body taste like citrus peel and tangerine, clementine type. I especially liked the way taste is defined, some point addictive. The acidity is sharp but I would ask for more. Although its fresh but is a very delicate wine.

Finish:
Short.

Conclusion:
It is a wine that can show its value if pairs with delicate fish such as sole, otherwise it will be lost completely with a meal with more structure.

Dow's Vintage Port 2007

Aromas:
Ligeiramente austero, sente-se ginjas e geleia.

Palato:

English:
This Port wine, was honored by Wine Spectator with 100 points. The highest score in accordance with the scale of the magazine that can be attributed. Obviously it increased the interest as well price speculation. Before the award, the price was 65€, last year reached 100€ and now you still can buy it in Portugal for 135 €.

When I bought this wine I had the objective what makes a perfect wine, despite the scores are not unanimous. Other publications awarded it with 96 points and here in Portugal, João Paulo Martins gave it 17,5 (on a scale of 20).

The moment of truth may not technically be the best given the evolutionary capacity of port, but this bottle was drunk on a special occasion and sometimes occurs some unpleasant surprises 20 years after. Thus I decided to drink it now.

Appearance:
Opaque purple color. I do not see the other side or the bottom of the glass. Tears roll down slowly.

Aromas:
Slightly austere, feels sour cherries and jam.

Palate:
Dominated by sour cherries, with very fine flavor and extraordinarily defined, incredibly fresh, has a sense of freshness that lasts because it not very sweet and concentrated character. In addition to the cherries, there is some undercover licorice and in the last layer blackberries.

Finish:
Long, impresses with finesse, rather than impact.

Conclusion:
I was wishing for something else. For 100 points I did not want perfection, I wanted something that surprised me and it did not succeed. When I was drinking it seemed closer to a highly evolved L.B.V. than a Vintage. Still it's worth for the incredible lightness, delicacy and definition.

Warre's Otima 10 Years Old Tawny

English:
Port started a journey to introduce new products aimed to attract younger consumers and increase consumption in the summer.

Otima is a wine that according to the producer should be drunk very cold. Some of the promotional material shows the bottle of wine in a ice bucket. In the bottle is inscribed - "Serve Chilled".

It is curious that for the British chilled, does not mean cold, I mean close to 5º C (to me in ice bucket as the producer shows in some promotional material the temperature is able to reach between 1- 2° C). For some people this can be a semantic discussion, but in the business world these questions around context are taken very seriously.

I was determined to follow the advice of producer and put the wine at a temperature close to 7° C and start the adventure without prejudice. As I did not like the result I let the temperature to raise up to 16º C.

Appearance:
Amber orange looks like Madeira wine. Tear glue to the glass.

Aromas:
7 ° C
On the nose there is not much development. Some orange jelly.

16° C
Remain the same aroma, but now it appears much more developed and nuts hints are added.

Palate:
7° C
Light and medium sweet, very compact and constant, but you can not take anything extraordinary some jelly and that's it. It resembles Martini.

16° C
Now you can feel live acidity. It starts dry and shy, then set it free. Thin orange jelly, some chocolate dust, ends with intense flavor of dried fruits: nuts, almonds and almond skin chewed. Fantastic.

Finish:
Long.

Conclusion:
Half bottle costs 13€. Advertising can lead other consumers to appreciate more port wine because it still have more glamor than other drinks, but served chilled at this price, people think that they are being fooled. Thus, pick up the bottle, put it in the refrigerator an hour before drink, and go for it.

English:
Made from  a blend of Chardonnay and Semilion.

Appearance:
Yellow, slightly saturated. Do not leaves ear into the glass.

Aromas:
Did not extract anything interesting, some stone fruit.

Palate:
Light body with essence of Chardonnay, some bread with butter and some ripe stone fruit , but all very faded and diluted with a flabby acidity. Finish is interesting: spicy finish seems nutmeg, with hints of melon meaning we are feeling the transition to the Semilion. Finish is impressive for a young wine, and even have some balsamic.

Finish:
Long.

Conclusion:
It costs 3,5€. Lacks consistency despite fool the senses in the end. Did not like it very much.

Torre do Frade Viognier 2010 Branco

Cor amarelo/esverdeada, ligeiramente saturada.

Aromas:

Sítio do Produtor:
http://www.torredofrade.pt

English:
Made fromViognier, aged 5 months in French oak barrels.

Appearance:
Greenish, slightly saturated.

Aromas:
Melon combined with notes of lime.

Palate:
Dry and light, with lively acidity, attack with a a blend of cantaloupe melon and citrus. Citrus then dominate our senses with melon underneath. Ends slightly mineral grows and becomes fat with great impact. Finish citric (lime) in an way.

Finish:
Long.

Conclusion:
I was afraid of what could be the tasting experience because I typically do not identify much with the wine character from the winemaker Paul Laureano, yet this, for 13€ proved a wise choice. It is a white who is not afraid to pair with food with more substance rather than delicate one.
